Movie Scene Sunday: The Truman Show

7/11/2010 Posted by Mel Got Served 1 comment
With Big Brother returning to the airwaves and the 24/7 live feeds rolling, I feel my addiction sinking in. You kind of feel like a voyeur watching these 13 HGs for months, knowing all their conversations, strategies, and tendencies. I then remember the amazing Truman Show, the story of a man unknowingly the star of the greatest reality show ever, and how the world watched him all the time, even as he slept. Sure you can watch Big Brother contestants sleep, but really it's pretty dull. Watching Jim Carrey sleep for 8 hours? No thanks, but I do love his morning greeting.

Movie Scene Sunday: Independence Day

7/04/2010 Posted by Mel Got Served No comments
Happy 4th of July! Today we celebrate America's independence... as well as nice weather, hamburgers, hot dogs and of course fireworks! Last year I posted the infamous Independence Day speech give by Bill Pullman. This year, I give you a brief moment of Will Smith welcoming an alien to earth. Not as inspirational but hey, good times!

Movie Scene Sunday: Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead

6/20/2010 Posted by Mel Got Served 3 comments
When I read an article announcing Hollywood is planning a remake of Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead, a bit of me died on the inside. Why must Hollywood continue to falter with remakes? Can't anyone in Hollywood come up with an original concept? Every movie that's being greenlit is stupid rip-off and knock-off of something we love and cherish. Like the new Karate Kid? Jaden Smith doesn't even learn karate, it's kung-fu! But the big studio brass wouldn't change the title because they wanted to bank off our 80's nostalgia. We're not that gullible, turds!

As for Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead- it's perfection! Why must you decimate its legacy? You mean to tell me you're going to try and top Sue Ellen Crandall's epic fashion show? Will Kenny be inspired by the baking of Paula Deen and other Food Network chefs? And what about the QED Report?! I don't even want to fathom them attempting to take on one of the greatest lines in cinematic history. Kenny, show them what they're messing with.

Movie Scene Sunday: Heavyweights

6/13/2010 Posted by Mel Got Served No comments
On Friday night I found myself glued to the Hallmark Channel and no it wasn't a Kellie Martin movie. Said addictive movie was Heavyweights and much like Jurassic Park, it's one of those movies that makes me stop channel surfing and plop down for an hour and a half and watch until end credits roll. If you don't like the movie Heavyweights I may have to be so bold to say I don't like you. Full of heart, hilarity, child stars, and most of all, one of the best Ben Stiller characters ever, Heavyweights is awesome. It also introduced us all to The Blob, the most amazing invention to ever to hit the lakes of our fine country. To this day I like by Tony Perkis' credo: "I eat success for breakfast... with skim milk!" Ok, I'm lying, but it's still a classic line.

Movie Scene Sunday: Hook

6/06/2010 Posted by Mel Got Served No comments
Tonight returns one of my favorite reality shows, The Next Food Network Star, and since I was stretching for inspiration for Movie Scene Sunday, I thought to myself, "What's one of my favorite food scenes?" Easy answer: the imaginary dinner scene in Hook where once you believe in food it either becomes delicious turkey legs or weird neon Cool Whip pies for a food fight. We also get an epic verbal smackdown of Peter Pan courtesy of the #1 teen of all time, Rufio. But Peter gets him back and then dinner can begin. Bangarang!

Movie Scene Sunday: Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

5/30/2010 Posted by Mel Got Served No comments
Since I was in high school I always said my dream was to turn my favorite childhood book, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs into a screenplay and a movie. Someone beat me to it. I then started my blog Mel Got Served, and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs used "SERVED" in their tagline. I felt like it was haunting me. Taunting me, even. "We got to it first, slowpoke!" I did not see the movie eventhough I thought this was something the 3D treatment could be awesome for.

So I finally watched it (thanks Starz!) and it was delightful. I went into this with kinda low expectations like a few laughs but I'd probably be happy for it to end. Not at all. What a hilarious movie. Now I will spend the rest of my days dreaming of have an ice cream snowball fight, pancakes crashing on schools, and riding on a sailboat made of PB&J sandwiches with swiss chess sails.

Movie Scene Sunday: Wayne's World

5/23/2010 Posted by Mel Got Served , 1 comment
MacGruber, based on the SNL skit about the worst bomb de-detonator, opens this weekend and has a fairly decent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Whenever a new SNL-inspired movie comes out though, the inevitable list of successes vs. bombs come out. The best movies that came out of SNL sketches are obviously Wayne's World and its sequel. Such hilarity from beginning to end, they parody popular movies, TV shows, and in one of my favorite sequences, product placement and commercials.

Movie Scene Sunday: Mommy Dearest

5/09/2010 Posted by Mel Got Served No comments
For Mother's Day it seemed only appropriate to pick the most legendary movie mother ever (though not for the right reasons). I don't even need to set up this clip because it is so epic, so legendary, so intense and violent and cringe-inducing, and one of the most quoted lines in the history of cinema. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you... Joan Crawford and Mommy Dearest.

Movie Scene Sunday: Beyond the Valley of the Dolls

5/02/2010 Posted by Mel Got Served 2 comments
When I saw that Movieoftheday was going to cover one of my favorite cult classics, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, I was ecstatic. Written by Roger Ebert (yes, that Ebert), the movie is full of sex, drugs, rock & rock, and an epic transgender reveal. This movie is pretty intense, over the top and deserves to be watched once just so you can say at the end, "What the eff did I just watch?"

You may recognize some moments from this scene taking place at an industry party. Obviously Austin Powers learned a few things from how Ronnie "Z-Man" Barcell and the The Carrie Nations party. "This is my happening and it freaks me out!"

Movie Scene Sunday: A League of Their Own

4/25/2010 Posted by Mel Got Served No comments
This week Glee paid homage to the legendary Madonna (though ignoring the freakish version now with creepy muscles and a skeletal face). However, never did the episode mention one of Madonna's best roles ever: "All the Way" May in A League of Their Own (bet you thought I'd say Evita). For the movie, Madonna went out of her comfort zone to play an extreme sexual baseball player in the 40s. This montage pretty much sums up the character and the scene where she teaches an illiterate girl to read may be in my top 10 scenes ever.

Movie Scene Sunday: The Room

4/11/2010 Posted by Mel Got Served , No comments
The Room has taken over my life. I can't stop quoting it, talking about it, forcing everyone to watch it. It's like this amazing Amazon review says, "With each viewing, The Room becomes more complexly entangled in and inseparable from my own life. I no longer know where The Room ends and I begin."

Today I present you the epic acting skills of Mr. Tommy Wiseau as he denies Lisa's abuse accusations, laughs at a story of a guy beating up a woman, and then praises his whorish girlfriend and lying BFF. There's so many quotable lines ("I did naht hit her, I did naht!") that your head might explode. "Oh, Hi Mark!" has become the greatest conversation starter for me: I recommend it for you as well.

Movie Scene Sunday: The Room

4/04/2010 Posted by Mel Got Served No comments
If there's one movie you have to see before you die, it's The Room. It's perhaps the worst movie ever made, yet enthralling. It's full of terrible acting, confusing storylines, softcore porn love-scenes, and random non sequiturs ("I did not hit her!!... Oh, hi Mark!"). It's so awful, yet truly mesmerizing. The Room has become a cult hit, even getting the Rocky Horror Picture Show treatment with loud, outrageous, interactive viewings and once a year, on April Fool's Day, Adult Swim airs The Room in its entirety (and with awesome black censors bars for the graphic sex).

The highlight of the film is when Johnny, played by the film's delusional director Tommy Wiseau, confronts his "future wife" Lisa about her false accusations of abuse and how much it pains him. It's the line you'll be quoting for days and likely sending you immediately to Amazon to buy it (while you're at it, buy me a copy too!) You surely won't regret it as you will cry laughing at the unintended comedic cult hit.

Movie Scene Sunday: Space Jam

3/28/2010 Posted by Mel Got Served 1 comment

Last night my alma mater, West Virginia, defeated Kentucky to make it into the NCAA Final 4 for the first time in 51 years. Movie Scene Sunday had to be a basketball pick to commemorate the occasion (I couldn't think of any West Virginia movies). Instead of trying to think of a good movie, like Hoop Dreams, I thought of a movie with a great soundtrack that was torture to watch: Space Jam. So enjoy this scene where they think they drank a performance enhancing drink, parody pulp fiction, and basically pull some Harlem Globetrotter shenanigan moves.

Movie Scene Sunday: Leprechaun: Back 2 Tha Hood

3/21/2010 Posted by Mel Got Served No comments
With St. Patrick's Day happening this past week, Movie Scene Sunday was an obvious choice: Leprechaun: Back 2 Tha Hood. I was nervous though because in my original searches, all embedding was disabled and I feared I'd have to find another movie to show (even the one where the leprechaun goes to space was blocked).

Ladies and gentlemen, if you love knock knock jokes, James Bond puns, leprechauns, Ice T (the rapper, not the beverage- but you're welcome to like the drink too), and mildly graphic violence, well hold onto your pot of gold cause this is a delight!

Movie Scene Sunday: Lucas

3/14/2010 Posted by Mel Got Served No comments
In sad news, Corey Haim died this week and it's such a bummer cause Corey Haim was such an 80's teen icon. Lost Boys, Licensed to Drive, and Dream a Little Dream (1 and 2) are all such 80's classics and it's a bummer that Corey (well, both Coreys) could never really get past the teen idol status. The Coreys are the epitome of bromance and BFFs and this news was a total downer.

Corey Haim's big breakout role came when he played nerdy outcast Lucas who joins the football team, almost dies from the game, and then wins respect of all the high school assholes who tortured him. I wanted the movie clip where Lucas gets Icy Hot rubbed on his junk, pushed out of the gym in just a towel, and humiliated but alas it's not on Youtube. Instead, enjoy Lucas totally SERVING some loser football coach. RIP Corey Haim!

Movie Scene Sunday: Naked Gun 33 1/3

3/07/2010 Posted by Mel Got Served , No comments
Happy Oscar night! It's the night where celebrities put on their borrowed finest, strut the red carpet, and pretend to not want an award that most actors strive for each year. But I love it! The Academy Awards are often mentioned in movies, like In & Out, but the Oscar scene that I always remember comes from Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult. The Mother Theresa musical is so fantastic, a knockdown drag-out fight with Raquelle Welch, and c'mon, the comic genius of Orenthal James Simpson.

Movie Scene Sunday: Best in Show

2/28/2010 Posted by Mel Got Served No comments
Best in Show is one of the movies that I will sit and watch the whole thing if I see it on. This movie is the perfect flick for Movie Scene Sundays and while I always catch myself singing, "God Loves a Terrier," I decided to try to find a clip that wasn't based on a musical number: cue the May/December romance of Jennifer Coolidge and her old-man husband. I'll let her explain their love, but I think this sums it up best, "We could not talk or talk forever... and still find things to not talk about."

Movie Scene Sunday: Hot Dog... The Movie

2/21/2010 Posted by Mel Got Served , No comments
The Winter Olympics have been going full-steam this week with some intense competition. The one sport that seems to be completely fillng up all air time is skiing. I can stay interested in skiing for maybe 15 minutes tops before I'm ready for a snooze. I think if the Olympics had a ski ballet event like in Hot Dog... The Movie I'd watch every second of it.

Movie Scene Sunday: Cool Runnings

2/14/2010 Posted by Mel Got Served , 1 comment
It's Olympic time folks! Bundle up, grab some hot cocoa, and get acquainted with the world's best winter athletes. Instead of giving you a lame Valentine's Day clip, I'm going with a Winter Olympics classic: Cool Runnings! Feel the rhythm! Feel the rhyme! Get on up, it's bobsled time!

Movie Scene Sunday: Up

2/07/2010 Posted by Mel Got Served , , No comments
When it comes to seeing movies, it's not very often I end up seeing the Academy Award nominees (though sometimes I make an effort to). When the Oscar nominations were announced this week, I knew Up was a shoo-in for Best Animated Feature Film, but was pretty excited when it was also nominated for Best Picture. I don't think it stands a chance at winning Best Picture, but I'm so glad it made it into the prestigious category (the 10 nominees really allowed some different films to make the cut). Enjoy a clip of Up while I try to make a plan to watch the other nominated movies.
